hou-brianmay-dynamic-image-2-562379198.jpgA memorial to Freddie Mercury will be unveiled by Queen's Brian May at a ceremony on Tuesday(24) in Feltham.

The tribute to Freddie will take the form of a Hollywood-style star and hundreds of fans are expected to make the trip to see May and Mercury's family pay tribute on the 18th anniversary of the rock star's death.

The event will open with a performance by a Queen tribute band at 11am before May and Mercury's mother Jer Bulsara and sister Kash Cooke unveil the plaque in The Centre's main piazza, where it will become a permanent fixture.

Freddie and his family lived in Gladstone Avenue in Feltham for 10 years in the 1960s and 70s and he studied art at Isleworth polytechnic, which is now West Thames College.

He then met Brian May, who was born in Hampton, through a friend at Ealing Art College and they went on to become half of one of the biggest rock bands of all time, Queen.

Cllr Paul Jabbal, chairman of the committee that arranged for the memorial, said: "I am delighted that at last we are honouring Freddie Mercury's memory and his achievements with a permanent memorial.

"As well as celebrating his life and success, it can serve as a reminder that if you work hard you can succeed in whatever you do. I'm looking forward to welcoming his family, friends and band members to Feltham to show how proud we are to be associated with such a legendary artist."

Lorraine Prideaux, manager of The Centre, added: "We are thrilled that the Council approached us to be part of this event and become the permanent location of this amazing tribute.

"I'm certain that the memorial will continue to draw crowds year on year as fans celebrate the life of a true rock icon and will instil a real sense of pride amongst local people."

All are welcome at the event and information on travelling to and parking at the event is available at www.thecentrefeltham.co.uk.
