Panic at health centre as fire breaks out

Posted by Ed Saunt on May 26, 09 04:45 PM in Health

Panicked patients were evacuated from Feltham health centre when a fire broke out on Tuesday morning.

Visitors and doctors were rushed out of the building in the Centre after the blaze started in a meeting room at about 9.30am.

The five GP practices and the library downstairs were shut for about an hour and a half and the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) flooded with the water used by firefighters to put out the flames.

Ritu Kumar, 68, who was accompanying her husband to the surgery, said: "The alarm went off and everyone panicked. It was difficult for a lot of us because we are old and can't walk down the stairs easily.

"I couldn't see any flames but the firemen said there was smoke from a fire in the surgery. I think we were very lucky."

Sally Mercer, was planning to visit the CAB and was shocked when she arrived at 11.30am to find the doors shut and the office soaked with water.

"It seems like a bit of a fiasco to be honest. First there's a fire and then there's a flood. What's going on? There's just a sign on the door saying it's shut - no other information," she said.

The Feltham Centre holds five GP practices: St David's Practice, Manor House Practice, Queens Park Medical Practice, Rochester Practice and the newly opened The Practice Heart of Hounslow.

The building is also home to the Feltham Library and the CAB - which was still closed on Tuesday afternoon.

An investigation by the London Fire Brigade found that the fire started because of a faulty circuit board on a water heater.

Hi,

I am surprised to read that, how come Fire Fighters fought and extinguished the fire in the Health Centre of THE CENTRE on the feltham highstreet, Looks like somebody didnt bother to ask the Centre Securiy or the Centre Management about the incident.
Actually the fact is that all the credit should go to "THE CENTRE SECURITYS" two brave officers who put their lives at risk and found the fire and extinguished through the fire extinguishers as the HEALTH CENTRE staff knows about that all. The FIRE BRIGADE turned up later when everything was under control.
Its really shocking to read that somebody skipped the names of the real fighters (2 Centre Security officers) who put their lives at risk to save the building and lives of people in there that time.
Can you people please find out from The CENTRE MANGEMENT of THE CENTRE, on Feltham highstreet about the real effort done by who and appereciate them, then it can be really fair.

With regards to this incidence, no doubt that the Fire Fighters secured the building and dealt with the cause of fire within 15-20 minutes after the fire alarm went off, but it was The Centre security staff who doused the initial flames with the hand held fire extinguishers. I think some credit should be given to them as well.
