CCTV cameras that recognise you coming to Feltham

CCTV cameras that recognise your face, read your number plate and even speak to you could be introduced in Feltham town centre.

Proposals to install new cameras in the area around the High Street and the station are due to be discussed by Hounslow councillors on Tuesday(5). High-tech options being considered include automatic number plate recognition, facial recognition, thermal imaging and speakers to communicate with criminals.

The plans are part of a £1.8m project to increase CCTV coverage across the borough, particularly in areas such as Feltham High Street, which have been identified as crime hotspots.

The Council claims there is 'overwhelming' support for more cameras in the borough but the prospect of the so-called 'intelligent' cameras has been met with mixed responses from residents and businesses.

Tracey Mercer, who is manager of UK Airport Cars in Browells Lane and has a daughter who goes to school in Feltham, said: "Big brother really is going to be watching us in Feltham then.

"Cameras probably do help but it's a bit of a cop out to rely on cameras. It's no substitute for real police officers.

"I truly believe police need to engage with and talk to young people and CCTV doesn't have that same impact - even if there is a speaker attached to it."

Melissa Clegg, who has two teenage children who regularly use Feltham train station, said: "I want my children to be safe as much as the next parent but I feel they are going down the wrong route here. We want more police on the streets, not robots that can scan your face and tell you off."

If agreed by councillors, precise locations for the cameras could be set next week, with the cameras scheduled to be up and running by March next year.

In the report due to be discussed at next week's Executive meeting, lead member for community safety Cllr Phil Andrews wrote: "Consultation has taken place over the past two years through established public meetings, area committees, and ward panels. There is an overwhelming desire and support for community safety CCTV in the borough."

We'd like to hear from you.
