Chip fat power for Feltham

Cooking oil and chip fat is to be transformed into green fuel as part of an innovative recycling scheme which has just been launched in Feltham.

Residents are being encouraged to bring the dregs from their frying pans to Space Waye recycling centre, at North Feltham Trading Estate, to be converted into a new clean fuel called LF100 - capable of powering electricity generators and cars.

The newly-installed collection tanks are open seven days a week from 8am to 4.45pm and can hold up to 1,000 litres of oil at a time - enough to power a family home for a year.

If this sounds like a lot, the average chip pan holds three litres of oil - which converted to green fuel can make 700 cups of tea, showing how anyone with a frying pan can contribute to clean energy.

Hounslow's environment chief Barbara Reid said: "I am very pleased that the range of recycling services has been expanded to include waste cooking oil which can now be turned into a clean, efficient and potentially sustainable energy source."

Cooking oil, when poured down the sink, causes major environmental damage, sinking into the water supply and harming rivers and wildlife.

Councils waste millions of pounds each year unblocking sewers from built up grease and the government has ordered them to reduce the amount of oil sent to landfills to meet recycling targets.

Space Waye is unable to accept any recycling from trade but restaurateurs and other businesses who would like their used cooking oil to be recycled too can contact Living Fuels on 01842 828395 to arrange a free collection.
